The steam brake pistons have been completely stripped, cleaned and re-assembled. New bushes have been fitted at both ends of the forged rods and new pins made to retain them.

The brake cylinders have had the bores cleaned and checked before the pistons were returned and the covers bolted back on.

The two steam brake cylinders/pistons are fitted at the front of the locomotive between the frames immediately behind the middle cylinder. As their name suggests, it is these items that use steam from the boiler to provide power, to apply the locomotive brakes.
