Recent work has included measuring the slidebars relative to the cylinder centreline so that we can establish accurate measurements for the machining of the crossheads.

A wire is stretched tight and set at the front and rear of the cylinder, exactly in the centre of the bore using a micrometer. Measurements are then taken from the wire to the slidebars to check alignment .

The crosshead slides in between the slide bars and transmits the movement of the piston to the connecting rod, which in turn pushes and pulls the driving wheels around.

Correct measurement and alignment is important as a great deal of force acts upon these components.
